Does an airline credit card pay for itself in free checked bags?

Count the bag fees a co-brand airline card would save you each year, and see how many round trips it takes to cover the annual fee.

Net per year, full-fee year
+$570
$720 saved on bags, minus a $150 fee
Example calculationPays for itself

At these inputs, free checked bags are worth $720 a year against a $150 fee, so the card pays for itself by $570. It takes 1 round trip on this airline.

The line crosses $0 where the card starts to pay for itself. Your own trip count is the larger filled point labeled "you", and its table row says "(you)".

What changes the answer most

Two what-ifs, worked out with the same formulas and one input changed. The biggest change is first.

  • One fewer round trip a year: net $390 instead of $570, down $180.
  • A bag fee $10 lower: net $410 instead of $570, down $160.

How this estimates

This is one year, with no loan, no price growth and no rewards on spending. It only counts what free bags and the optional extras are worth to you.

  1. Trips on the card's airline are your round trips times your share on that airline.
  2. Covered travelers are the smaller of the people on your reservation and you plus the companions the card covers.
  3. Each round trip saves the first bag fee, times the covered travelers, times 2 for both directions. A covered second bag adds its fee times 2, for you only. Boarding value, if you entered any, is added.
  4. Value per year is trips on the card's airline times the value per round trip, plus your other yearly value.
  5. Net per year is that value minus the annual fee. With a waived first year, the first-year line leaves the fee out.
  6. Break-even is the fee, minus your other yearly value, divided by the value per round trip, then divided by your share on that airline and rounded up to a whole trip.
  7. The answer is "pays" when net is at least $0.50, "does not pay" when it is at most minus $0.50, and "breaks even" in between.

If you check no bags, or your bag fee is $0, the bag perk saves nothing and the page says so. A "does not pay" answer is as real as a "pays" one.

What this does not count

  • The bag perk usually works only on the card's own airline, and only when your frequent flyer number is on the reservation. Some cards also need the ticket bought with the card.
  • Each card covers a different number of companions. Check the number on your card's page.
  • Points, miles, welcome offers, companion certificates, lounge access, statement credits and elite status are not counted unless you type a dollar value into the optional boxes.
  • International and long-haul fees, overweight or oversized bags, third bags and fare-by-fare fee differences are not modeled.
  • Bag fees change a few times a year and vary by fare and purchase date. Confirm the fee on the airline's page and the perk terms on the card's page before you apply.

Want to check the card's rewards on everyday spending too? Use the credit card fee payback calculator. This page counts no spending rewards at all.

Sources and date checked

Checked 2026-10-17. The Delta fees and card fees come from Delta's own pages. The American fees come from its 2026-04-09 news release. The United, Southwest and JetBlue figures, and the companion rules, come from news and card-review reports because those airline pages could not be opened. They are marked typical, so edit them.
