How many washes a month before an unlimited car wash club pays?

Compare one flat monthly club price with paying for each wash. Enter how often you wash in salt season and the rest of the year.

Example calculation
Break-even washes
2.0 a month
You entered 1.4 washes a car a month in club months.
Club does not pay

At these inputs, the club all year costs about $147 more in the first year than paying for each wash. It needs about 2.0 washes a month in the months you are in the club to break even, about one every 15 days. You entered 1.4. Below that, paying for each wash costs less.

Cheapest at these inputs: paying for each wash and the club for 5 months, about $357 in the first year.

About 2.0 washes a month pays for the club. At list prices that is the plan price divided by the price of one wash: $41.99 divided by $21 is 2.00.

If you would wash more only because the club is paid for, those extra washes are not savings. Prices and terms change without notice. Check your plan's terms for notice dates and fees.

Cheapest in the first year: a tie of paying for each wash and the club for 5 months. Cheapest in a later year: a tie of paying for each wash and the club for 5 months.

Staying in all year costs about $147 more in your quiet months (the months outside salt season) than buying those washes one at a time.

Cancel timing and fees add nothing to the part-year club at these inputs.

The clubs checked ask for notice before the billing date: 5 business days, 7 days or 10 days. Miss it and you may pay for another month.

Month by month and over the years

At these inputs, over 3 years the club all year ends up $454 behind paying for each wash, with the same washes every year.

Flat-price check: with prices held flat, the 3-year total would be -$441 instead of -$454.

How this estimates

Washes a year. Cars times (salt-season months times washes a month in salt season, plus the other months times washes a month the rest of the year).

Paying for each wash. Washes a year times the price of one wash, less coupons (never below $0), plus sales tax.

The club. The club price for each month you keep it, for every car, less any first-month discount. You keep it in your busiest months first and buy the other months' washes one at a time. A club kept fewer than 12 months is cancelled and rejoined each year, so the cancel fee, extra months and (from year 2) rejoin fee apply. The sign-up fee is paid once. Tax is added to all of it.

Break-even. The washes a month, a car, in your club months at which the club costs the same as paying for each wash in the first year: dues and fees divided by the price of one wash, shared over the club months and cars. Tax raises both sides equally, so it never moves it.

Tips, trips and the years. A tip and a trip cost are added to both options, so they never change the difference; they matter only against washing at home. Over the years the washes stay the same and prices rise by the yearly rises you enter. The first-month discount counts in year 1 only and the rejoin fee from year 2. The flat-price line repeats the total with both rises at 0.

Staying in all year. The quiet months are the ones you wash least. Their cost is the club price for them minus what the same washes cost one at a time, never below $0.

Salt and how often to wash

AAA says a buildup of salt on your vehicle can lead to rusting or corrosion. AAA says to wash at least once a month all year and maybe more often in winter; Consumer Reports says monthly in snow season, or more often if the car is coated in salt. This page compares cost only.

Consumer Reports says an underbody spray is often an extra charge. Check which tier includes it.

No state road department or extension page with washing advice or salt-season dates was found, so 5 months of salt season is a typical value. Edit it for your area.

What this leaves out

  • Interior cleaning, detail work, coatings and add-on packages.
  • Yearly prepaid plans, wash packs and gift cards. Enter what you would pay for each wash or month instead. A yearly plan is not refunded if you stop early.
  • Two or more blocks of club months in a year, and changing level mid-year. To model a pause, set the months in the club to the months you stay in and leave the cancel, rejoin and extra-month fields at 0.
  • A club that works at one site only (put the extra driving in the trip cost). Each club covers one car and cannot move to another.
  • Washing more because a wash feels free, fleet use, and any claim about what other members do.
